He married the late Geraldine Gordon Blackwell, the daughter of the late Bishop and Mrs. Buford F. Gordon. His wife of 48 years predeceased him on February 2, 1996. George Blackwell exhibited a deep interest in human rights and played an active role in bringing about social change. He opened doors for all races at the YMCA's in New Britain, CT and Hackensack, NJ, by becoming the first African American member of each organization. The New Jersey Bergen County Council of Churches became more responsive to its commitment and witness by electing him as its first African American President. He was a charter chapter member of the Bergen County Chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality, participated in Freedom Rides, Sit-Ins, swimming pool picket lines, and the memorable March on Washington led by the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1964. George Blackwell had the privilege of being seated in the fourth row. In 1992, Dr. Blackwell moved to Williamston, NC and began a new phase in his ministry as the Pastor of Canaan Temple A.M.E.Z church in Edenton, NC. His final service in the ministerial capacity was at Williams Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, here in Williamston, where he continued to lead his membership with spiritual wisdom and guidance. During this tenure he remarried in 1997, to the former Ms. Vivian Scarborough, who is now deceased. She brought into this union a son and two granddaughters.
