Horace Lyons

Valley Stream, New York Mr. Horace Lyons was born on January 1, 1932 in Williamston, NC to the late Edna Riddick Lyons and John Henry Lyons and departed this life on Sunday, October 12, 2014 at home with his family in Valley Stream, NY. He was one of fourteen children. Eleven of his siblings preceded him in death. Horace was educated in the Williamston Public School system. He labored in the fields along with his parents and siblings until advised by his parents to migrate up north for a better life. He worked at the Steel Mill in Philadelphia, PA for a short time before moving to New York. In February 1964, Horace met Margaret Smalls in Brooklyn, NY and they later married in 1966. In 1967 Horace became employed with the New York City Housing Authority. In October 1972 Horace and Margaret welcomed their daughter Philicia into the world. Horace found his faith at Refuge Church of Christ in Brooklyn, NY where he later became a Deacon. In 1995 Horace retired from the New York Housing Authority after 28 years of service. Horace continued an active role as a Deacon in the church until his health failed him in 2006. Horace was a loving and caring man who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Margaret Lyons, daughter Philicia Lyons Weir, son in-law Alonzo Weir, Jr., two grandchildren Alonzo and Nyla Weir, two step children Cora Stafford and Ray Wright, two grandchildren, Terrell Jackson and Brittani Cameron; two brothers Grover and Rufus Lyons, six sister-in-laws and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A visitation will be held from 11:00 am to 12 Noon on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at Bethlehem AME Zion Church in Williamston, NC. The funeral will be held at 12 Noon on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at Bethlehem AME Zion Church in Williamston with Pastor Haywood Dillahunt officiating. Burial will follow in the Whitley Cemetery in Williamston, NC.
