Myrtle Moore

Myrtle Bates Moore, daughter of Beulah and Thomas Jones, was born June 21, 1924 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was one of five children that included Janie Bell, Charles, Cicero, and LaSalle. At an early age, she lost her mother and father and was then raised by her Aunt and Uncle, Mary and Sim Bates. After growing up in Kentwood, Louisiana and attending schools there, she moved to Los Angeles, CA where she met Phillip Moore. Shortly thereafter, they were married, and a new family was started. After a while, Myrtle, Phillip, and their daughter, Willie Mae, moved to Portsmouth, Virginia. There, the family grew to five more children: Norman, Garry, Roxie, Frederick, and John (deceased). Myrtle also played an integral part in helping to raise her 14 grandchildren: Verlinda, Brenda, Myrtle, Delois, Robin, Robert, Ethoria, Corey, Coralee, Sabrina, Electra, Shawn, Crystal, and Dwayne. Myrtle was a stay-at-home Mom for most of her children
